For all my historic people out there, this is the place to visit when in Maryland. Frederick is said to be the place where the Pennsylvania Dutch settled in Frederick as they immigrated westward in the late 18th century. According to Government documents, Frederick was also a stop along the German migration route that led down through the “Great Valley” now known as the Shenandoah Valley.
Frederick offers excellent choices of things to do. Starting with the historic sites and museums located downtown district. They include historic Bridges, Shrines, Monocacy National Battlefield, and National Museum of Civil War.
For the outdoor lovers, there are excellent collections of parks and outdoor activities that will keep you busy for sometime. Great locales includes:
- Catoctin Mountain National Scenic Byway: This place is very beautiful and very scenic area expands from Potomac River (Virginia) and ends some many miles at Pennsylvania.
- Memorial Park. According to county’s information records, this park is the only one in Maryland to commemorate solders from every American war from French and Indian war to Gulf War.
- The Heart of the Civil War Heritage Area
- South Mountain State Park
- The Appalachian Trail
5) Potomac
Potomac Village is tucked far from major tourist areas. This location is convenient to Ronald Reagan International Airport. While driving up to the village, you will be amazed at the scenic road and beautiful homes along the road.
Once you are in Potomac Village, visit this quaint ice scream store called Sprinkles (its all about the sprinkles). Why this particular place you may ask?
Sprinkle’s is very special to this community of Potomac Village people. The store has been there for more than 20 years and business keeps growing every year. Also the staff is excellent at taking care of customers and making very delicious and decadent cakes and pies. In addition, the owner knows how to treat the customers and will do whatever it takes to make customer happy.
From here you can drive down Potomac River about 5 miles from the Village. Here you can go hiking at the great hiking places, river kayaking, water rafting and even relax at the picnic areas and take a closer look at the surroundings. With this also, you can enjoy bird watching at the Potomac River while you sit and see the river flow down past you.

You know, for some reason I've never been to Maryland. Years ago, a got a Big Pecker's shirt from a guy my sister was dating at the time and lost it. Not until about a year ago did I finally get another one from a co-worker who went there on vacation. One of these days, I'd really will go there, especially during the summer time, of course. You just cemented my desire to go after reading this hub, so thank you for that, Leop!
